私と鎌倉

 

 私が横須賀から鎌倉に来たのは、いくつの時か覚えていない。恐らくまだ物心がつかない項、私の両親と懇意にしていた人に連れられて鎌倉見物に来たのであろう。家の古びた家具の引出しにその頃の鎌倉土産の定番だった貝で作った指輪がいくつかしまってあったのを覚えている。おそらく毎年一度は横須賀の駅からSLの引く列車に乗って鎌倉を訪ねていただろう。但し鎌倉のどこへ行ったかは全然記憶にない。

 

 小学校四年のとき遠足で鎌倉に来た。五年生は江ノ電で江ノ島まで行けたが四年生は鎌倉といってもごく狭い範囲しか廻らなかった。そのときの印象も全然記憶に残っていないが、若宮大路が一般の道路と違い歩道と車道が逆になっているのに驚いたことは覚えている。

 

 師範学校に入学して、どうしても通らなければならない関門があった。それは「鎌倉巡り」である。修身の担当で全監長でもあったO先生の御案内で今思い出してみるとどこをどのように巡ったか定かではないが観光コースには乗っていない「百八やぐら」「唐島やぐら」などを含む鎌倉全域を二日か三日がかりで巡ったように思う。O先生の解説は非常にユニークで、宝戒寺では「柿喰えば鐘がなるなり宝戒寺」などとユーモアたっぷりで皆を笑わせたものである。そして実は、自分でも気がつかなかったが私が鎌倉に魅せられ、鎌倉に住み、鎌倉に勤め、鎌倉を歩くきっかけになったのがこの「鎌倉巡り」だったのである。

 

 昭和二十年十月、復員した私は、もとの職場に復帰した。私が受け持ったのは二年生だった。私は子供達にそれぞれが住む鎌倉を知ってもらおうと春休みを利用して学生時代に巡った史跡を一週間かけて巡ってみたが、その荒れ果てた姿に愕然としたのである。

 

 昭和三十年代の前半かと思うが、鎌倉市の主宰で「成人学校」が開校した。場所は私が勤めていた第一小学校。週に一度、それぞれの教科について午後六時から八時まで学んだが、教科が終了するとレクリェーションとして当時アメリカから入って来た「スクェアーダンス」を行い、私がその指導を受け持つことになったのである。当時の第一小学校の講堂が一杯になる程の盛況だった。

 

 それはともかく、学校の職員下校時刻から成人学校の教科が終わるまでの時間無駄にしてはと思い、幸い教科の中の「郷土誌」を受講することにした。講師は当時横須賀市立馬堀中学校で教鞭をとっておられた八幡義生先生だった。私達受講生一同は先生の造詣の深さに大きな感銘を受け、成人学校閉校後、有志が集まり「郷土誌同好会」というグループを結成し、先生を中心に鎌倉の奥深さを探ったり世に知られていない史跡の紹介につとめた。このことが私の鎌倉への思慕をますます深めることになった。よき師と、よき友たちを得て−。

 

 そして昭和二十四年、私は生れ育った横須賀の地を離れ鎌倉に住むようになったのである。

全監長、それぞれの教科、昭和24年、「愕然とした」で突然終わった段落。疑問を感じる方は多そうですがこれも随筆の面白さでしょう。英訳は難しく勉強になりました。

Kamakura and I

 

    I don't remember how many years old I was when I first visited Kamakura from Yokosuka. I guess that I was taken to Kamakura for sightseeing by my parent's friend before I got able to walk and talk. I remember that there were a couple of rings made of shells, which was a standard of the souvenir sold in Kamakura, inside a drawer of an aged furniture of my parent's house. Probably, I visited Kamakura at least once every year by the train towed by a steam locomotion from the Yokosuka station. However, I have no memory where I visited in Kamakura.

 

    I came to Kamakura as school outing when I was in the fourth year at elementary school. Although fifth-year students were allowed to visit Enoshima Island by the Enoden train, those fourth-year students walked around in just a small area even in Kamakura. I have no memory of what and how I was impressed at that time. However, I remember that I was surprised at the Wakamiya Oji street because the sidewalk and driving lane was laid out in an opposite manner to general roads.

 

    After I entered a teacher's school, first-year students had to go on the "Tour in Kamakura." The guide was teacher O, who was in charge of moral training and also the general dormitory inspector. Now I am not sure where and how I visited. I guess that I toured the whole area of Kamakura including Hyakuhachi-Yagura and Karashima-Yagura, which were not included in the sightseeing course, in a couple of days. His explanation was really unique. For example, when we visited the Hokaiji temple, he made the student laugh by composing a haiku poem as instantly mocking a famous piece composed by a great haiku poet, Masaoka Shiki and voicing it in front of the students. In fact, I didn't notice it even by myself, but this "Tour in Kamakura" triggered my love to Kamakura. I was fascinated by Kamakura and started living in Kamakura, working at a school in Kamakura, and taking a walk around Kamakura.

 

    I was discharged from military service and returned to my original workplace in October 1945. I got charged in second-year students of elementary school. I went on a week-long pilgrimage of the historical sites that I had visited during my school days by utilizing a spring vacation to help the students know about their hometown, Kamakura. I was shocked by the ruinous appearance.

 

    I remember it was in the second half of the 1950's that the "Adult School" was hosted by the city of Kamakura. The place was at the first elementary school, which was my workplace. Participants learned each subject once a week from six o'clock to eight o'clock in the evening. After the class of the subject finishes, a square dance session was held, which was introduced from the US as recreation activity at that time. I took care of teaching of the dance. The session was so popular that the lecture hall of the school became full in those days.

 

    Anyway, I didn't want to wastefully use the time from the going-home time of the school staff to the ending time of the adult school, so I attended a class titled the journal of local history, which was fortunately included in the subjects. The lecturer was Yawata Yoshio, who was teaching at Yokosuka Municipal Mabori Middle School. The attendants including me were greatly impressed by the detailed knowledge of the teacher. After the term of the adult school came to the end, volunteers gathered and made a group titled the local history journal club, exploring Kamakura's deep history and introducing historical sites about which little was known. I came upon a nice teacher and good friends, so my love to Kamakura became deeper.

 

    Then, I left my hometown, Yokosuka, and started living in Kamakura in 1949.

    General dormitory inspector, each subject, 1949, and the paragraph suddenly closed after saying, "I was shocked".... I guess that a lot of readers will feel questions, but such questions might make this essay more interesting. Translation to English was difficult and I learned a lot.
